Central Motivations Quiz![]() Your Central Motivations are what make you tick. They are clues to finding a 'Job' that consistently excites you and sustains your interest in it. Richard Nelson Bolles of "What Color is Your Parachute" fame was the first to come up with the idea of looking at the role of "Central Motivators" in our work life. Whether you have only one or several central motivations, knowing what motivates you will allow you to find a job that incorporates or is based on those motivations. And that will give you the edge in the workplace.
1. TO OWN/POSSESS - (Money/ Things/ Status/ People) Desire to acquire or own it, whether it be: possessions, property, family, business, power, people. Chief reward: "This is mine." Cool Lukewarm Hot Desire to take charge, stand at the top of the ladder - where you can decide how things will be done. Chief Reward: "My decisions are crucial here." Cool Lukewarm Hot Desire to fight the wrong-doers, root out the old guard, come against entrenched obsolescent or antiquated ideas. Chief Reward: "I beat them." Cool Lukewarm Hot Able to see a need and to create something where before, there was nothing. Chief Reward: "I Developed it." Cool Lukewarm Hot Desire to be the first, the fastest, the most incredible, the most outstanding, the most beautiful, the coolest, better than all the rest . . . Chief Reward: "They noticed me." TO GRASP THE OPPORTUNITY/CAPITALIZE ON THE POTENTIAL OF - (Situations/Markets/Things/People) Sees the potential in raw talent, knows a hot product before it hits the big time, recognizes a trend before anyone else sees it. . . Cool Lukewarm Hot Desire to stand on the podium and receive the adulation of a cheering crowd, to be in the public eye, to take center stage, to bathe in the limelight . . . TO EXCEL EXPECTATIONS/FULFIL NEEDS OF - (that are Demanded/Needed/or Inherent) Meticulous attention to the requirements, defined specifications, timetables, meeting the customer's expectations, fulfilling the orders from the top. . . Chief Reward: "I have impressed them all". Cool Lukewarm Hot Repairs what is broken, updates the outmoded, comes out with a newer design . . . Chief Reward: "I made it work". Cool Lukewarm Hot Refines the crude and unsophisticated, achieves command of a process, procedure, skill, allowing total control over the unpredictable . . . Chief Reward: "I am the expert." Cool Lukewarm Hot Initiates a new venture, or project, becomes the team leader; implements a new product line, launches a new business endeavor; organizes the party. Chief Reward: "I made it happen." Cool Lukewarm Hot Wants to know the authentic background, that lies behind everything, to get at the real truth. Chief Reward: "I know what's behind it all. I know the truth." Cool Lukewarm Hot To see the big picture, to form the whole from the pieces. Mystery writers, forensics expert, coroners, research investigators of all kinds Looks for the pieces that make up the puzzle of why, how, what. Chief Reward: "I can put it together." Cool Lukewarm Hot 21. TO FIND OUT HOW THINGS WORK - (Things/Processes/Systems/the World) To explore the workings of, to take apart and see how and why they work. Chief Reward: "I now know how it works." Cool Lukewarm Hot 22. TO PROTECT AND WORK IN CLOSE HARMONY WITH NATURE - (Animals/Plants/Insects/Aquatic Life) To understand, preserve, communicate and spiritually connect with Nature. Chief Reward: "I connected.
