Take a look through these 22 Motivations and see which ones you have been living by. You will recognize them by the Chief Reward associated with each.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of all the motivations that energize our lives. You may be aware of others.

CENTRAL MOTIVATION
CHIEF REWARD I GET . . .
    1. TO ACQUIRE/POSSESS
    (Money/Things/Status/People)

Desire to have one's own . . . toys, possessions, houses, family.

Chief reward: "This is mine."
    2. TO BE IN CHARGE/ COMMAND OF
    (Others/Things/Organizations)

Desire to be on top, in authority, in the saddle - where it can be determined how things will be done.

Chief reward: "I decide".
    3. TO COMBAT/PREVAIL
    (Over Adversity, Over Adversaries, Over Evil, Over Opposing Philosophies)

Desire to come against the bad guys, entrenched status quo, old technology.

Chief reward: "I won".
    4. TO DEVELOP/BUILD
    (Structures/Technical Things)

Desire to make something where there was nothing.

Chief reward:"I created this".
    5. TO EXCEL/BE THE BEST
    (vs. Others/Conventional Standards)

Desire to be the fastest, first, longest, earliest, more complex, better than others at . . .

Chief reward: "I stood out".
    6. TO EXPLOIT/ACHIEVE POTENTIAL
    (of Situations/Markets/Things/People)

Sees a silk purse, a giant talent, a hot product, or a promising market before the fact.

Chief reward: "I had the vision of what it could be, and helped that vision to become reality."
    7. TO GAIN RESPONSE/INFLUENCE BEHAVIOUR
    (from People/Through People)

Wants to touch others, at the heart level.

Chief reward: "I got a warm response. They were touched."
    8. TO GAIN RECOGNITION ATTENTION
    (from Peers/Those in Authority/General Public)

Desire to wave at a cheering crowd, to appear in the news, to be known, to dance in the spotlight.

Chief reward: "People know who I am."
    9. TO IMPROVE/MAKE BETTER
    (Oneself/Others/Work/Organizations)

Makes what is marginal good, what is good better, what makes a little money, make a lot more money.

Chief reward: "I made it better".
    10. TO MAKE THE TEAM/GRADE
    (Established by Others or the System)

Gains access to the Board, the Inner Circle, the Platinum Card, the country club, executive dining room.

Chief reward: "I did it!"
    11. TO MEET NEEDS/FULFIL EXPECTATIONS
    (That are Demanded/Needed/or Inherent)

Strives to meet specifications, shipping schedules, what the customer wants, what the boss has expressed.

Chief reward:"They are impressed with me".
    12. TO MAKE WORK/MAKE EFFECTIVE
    (Things/Systems/Operations)

Fixes what is broken, changes what is out-of-date, redesigns what has been poorly conceived . . .

Chief reward: "Now it works".
    13. TO MASTER/PERFECT
    (Some Subject/Skill/Equipment/Objects)

Goes after rough edges, complete domination of a technique, total control over the variables . . .

Chief reward: "I mastered that".
    14. TO ORGANIZE/OPERATE
    A Business/Team/Product Line)

The entrepreneur, the beginner of new ventures, business opportunities.

Chief reward: "I brought it into being".
    15. TO OVERCOME/PERSEVERE
    (Obstacles/Handicaps/Unknown Odds)

Goes after the seemingly impossible, climbs Mt. Everest, breaks the four minute mile.

Chief reward: "They said: 'It couldn't be done.' But I did it".
    16. TO PIONEER/EXPLORE
    (Technology/Cultures/Ideas)

Presses through established lines, knowledge, boundaries.

Chief reward: "To boldly go where no one has gone before".
    17. TO SERVE/HELP
    (People/Organizations/Causes)

Carries the soup, ministers to the wounded, helps those in need, is there for the vulnerable.

Chief reward: "To make the world a kinder place".
    18.TO SHAPE/INFLUENCE
    (Material/Policy/People)

Wants to leave a mark, to cause change, to impact.

Chief reward: "They won't forget me".
    19. TO FIND THE TRUTH/ TO GET TO THE HEART OF THE MATTER
    (Info/People/Science/Spirituality)

Wants to know the authentic background, that lies behind everything, to get at the real truth.

Chief reward: "I know what's behind it all. I know the truth".
    20. TO PUT THE PIECES TOGETHER/ TO SEE THE BIG PICTURE, WHAT THE WHOLE LOOKS LIKE
    (Technology/Products/Information/People)

Mystery writers - piecing together the story, forensic science - looking at the pieces and reconstructing the crime scene, coroners, police, investigators of all kinds.

Chief reward: "I can put the pieces together".
    21. TO FIND OUT HOW THINGS WORK
    (Things, Processes, the World)

Wants to take it apart and see how and why it works.

Chief reward: "I know how it works".
    22. TO PROTECT AND WORK IN CLOSE HARMONY WITH NATURE
    (Animals, Plants, Insects, Aquatic life)

Wants to understand, preserve, communicate and spiritually connect with Nature.

Chief reward: "I connected. I bridged the gap and made a difference".
